Smallville Season 4 Episode 01 – Crusade – Clark’s first flight

Three months after the safehouse explosion that seemingly killed Chloe and her father (see COVENANT), her cousin Lois arrives in Smallville and watches a video message Chloe recorded for Clark. Intending to investigate her cousin’s death, Lois sets out to find Clark, only to crash into a field and find him naked and amnesiac. She takes him to the hospital, where she’s forced to stay with him until a doctor can examine him, but while waiting, they run into Martha, who was there visiting a comatose Jonathan. After being led to the farm by Martha, Clark insists that he’s Kal-El of Krypton, and that it’s time to fulfill his destiny, before flying off into the distance to seek out a Kryptonian crystal Lex found in Egypt. Meanwhile, Lex suffers the effects of having been poisoned by Lionel; Lana’s art history project leaves her with a mysterious tattoo in Paris; Martha receives help from Dr. Swann’s assistant, Bridgette Crosby; Lionel prepares for his upcoming trial; Jonathan awakens from his coma; and Clark, having reverted to normal, discovers that Chloe may still be alive.

Accompanying the start of the fourth season is the introduction of future star reporter, and future Mrs. Clark Kent, Lois Lane. Though SMALLVILLE writers have a tendency to reinvent the Superman mythos, and I can usually forgive them, their take on Lois leaves me with mixed opinions. On the one hand, it’s too early for them to meet (like that’s going to stop the writers); on the other, I’ve been an avid Clois supporter ever since LOIS & CLARK (the show that got me into the big, blue Boy Scout in the first place) and I actually enjoyed all of Lois’s interactions with Clark/Kal-El in this episode.

That being said, I also liked Margot Kidder as Dr. Swann’s assistant, and as if that wasn’t a big enough nod to the movies, I loved the mention of her and Dr. Swann being lovers “in a different lifetime”. And, of course, when Kal-El flew toward Lex’s jet, one of the pilots just had to make the classic “bird or plane” comment. To wrap this up, I’ve decided to raise my rating system to ten stars, and give this ep a perfect ten.

For me, the hightlights were: Chloe’s video message; Lois crashing into a field and finding Clark naked; Lois taking Clark to the hospital and waiting with him for a doctor; Lois and Clark running into Martha; Martha trying to jog Clark’s memory, then Clark taking flight; Lana’s art history project in Paris; Clark/Kal-El taking the Kryptonian stone from Lex; Lois and Martha at the Kent farm; Martha’s conversation with Bridgette Crosby; Kal-El in the cave/Martha saving Clark with black kryponite; Clark, Martha, and Jonathan at the hospital; and Lois and Clark’s conversation at the cemetary.
